BMW Group Malaysia and Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech) officially marked their partnership at the 7th International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM), to offer the ChargeNow mobility service via GreenTech’s ChargEV platform.

This initiative is part of the BMW 360° ELECTRIC program and allows owners of BMW plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles like the i8, 330e and X5 xDrive40e on-the-go charging. With the BMW ChargeNow  card, owners of these vehicles get access to the ChargEV partner charging stations 24/7. GreenTech currently has about 95 ChargEV charging stations in major urban centers and targets to install another 300 ChargEV stations by this year-end to meet its ultimate target of 25,000 charging stations by 2020. This is to support the expected growth of EV and hybrid vehicle ownership to about 100,000 vehicles in the next 5 years.

“In the past year, we at BMW have introduced three all-new Hybrid vehicles with eDrive Technology in the country – the BMW i8, the BMW X5 xDrive40e and the BMW 330e. This move demonstrates a new understanding of premium vehicles that are strongly defined by sustainability. A key strategy for the nation to move towards sustainable mobility within the urban environment is by offering mobility services which make electric driving a comfortable experience and a daily pleasure,” said Mr. Sashi Ambi, Head of Corporate Communications, BMW Group Malaysia.

“It is important that we ensure the necessary infrastructure is available to support the new technology as this is what will also increase consumer confidence in the viability of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. As of today, the demand for both the BMW X5 xDrive40e and BMW 330e continues to grow. We have already begun delivering both vehicles to our customers,” added Mr. Sashi.

The ChargEV public charging stations can be located via the My BMW Remote app (for BMW eDrive owners) or the BMW i Remote app (for BMW i owners); the apps also allow owners to check the charging stations’ availability and send their location directly to the vehicle. The onboard navigation system via the BMW ConnectedDrive services also shows charging station locations as does the ChargEV online map.

The ChargEV charging stations can be used by simply tapping the ChargeNow card at the card reader before plugging in and then tapping the card again when charging is done.

The BMW 360° ELECTRIC program and GreenTech’s ChargEV service is on display at IGEM in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Hall 4. Discover more at the show on 8 October (Saturday).

The main Ranger production facility for the Asia Pacific markets is AutoAlliancce Thailand (AAT), a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Mazda Motor Corporation. And with AAT expected to operate at or near maximum capacity, Ford has invested an additional US$ 186 million to start up the Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) facility to help meet extraordinary demand across the Asia Pacific region.

TC_Ranger_Website_17_FEB_EngAs the number three pickup truck in Thailand, the Ford Ranger has continued to increase segment share since the launch of the new Ranger in 2011. This includes gaining its highest ever share of the segment in August, at more than 10%.

Ford is one of the largest automotive investors in Thailand, having invested a total of more than US$ 2.7 billion between its wholly-owned and joint-venture manufacturing facilities, and currently employs about
10,000 people in Thailand.

Ford Engineer Shares Tips On Efficient Running

$

To go from running 5 km every week to running a marathon is no easy feat. Strategies that work for short distances may leave you running on empty in a longer race, so how do you learn how to use your energy efficiently to last the full distance?

Dallis Sun is an engine systems supervisor who has been working with Ford for more than 15 years. He ran his first half marathon six years ago, but it was a rocky start. “My first race was a disaster, and I burned out halfway,” he says. But that didn’t deter him from trying again. He realized that his training as an engineer for Ford’s line of EcoBoost engines and his knowledge of vehicle design could help him to become a better runner and marathon finisher. “In my job, I am constantly problem solving and I immediately wanted to try again.” Dallis has now completed six half marathons, here’s what he did to get better results:

1. Know the terrain

Ford EcoBoost Marathon Story EcoSport - CopyBefore the run, make sure you get the lay of the land. “During my first race, I was surprised to find that the second half of the course included a lot of steep hills,” says Dallis. A lack of preparation meant that he didn’t have enough energy left to push through.

“Think about when you’re driving on long road trips: It’s crucial to map your route and be aware of the environment you will pass through – even the most efficient engines will use more fuel when climbing.” To prevent any last-minute surprises on your run, research or speak to someone who has been through it before. “Every bit of information you get will help you plan ahead.”

2. Start slowly and smoothly

EcoBoost Marathon Story Focus 2When you’re waiting at the starting line it’s incredibly tempting to take off quickly. The pent-up energy of the crowd combined with pre-match jitters sends your adrenaline into overdrive. “If you rush your departure, you can waste precious glycogen stores that you need later in the race.” Dallis points out that this is no different from waiting at traffic lights.

“When you take off quickly you’ll burn way more fuel than if you ease on the accelerator.” Smooth and steady starts will keep your tank fuller for longer. If you need some help at the start of your marathon, Dallis suggests trying some basic deep breathing exercises. This can help calm your nerves and ensure a smooth start.

3. Run light

At Dallis’ first race, he was a packhorse. “I brought my phone, an MP3 player, vheadphones, my fitness tracker, a small snack and a windbreaker – to say it was overkill was an understatement.” Luckily the art of downsizing comes naturally to an EcoBoost engineer. EcoBoost engines have won dozens of awards for their ability to deliver high everyday fuel economy in a compact package, while still giving drivers the power they want.

“To improve fuel economy, we are always looking for ways to make vehicles lighter, and the EcoBoost engine is a great example.” A smaller engine means that drivers don’t waste fuel carrying around extra weight. “I applied this same thinking to my running. Now I only run with my fitness tracker and I’ve also invested in a pair of high quality, lightweight running shoes.” The less you run with, the more energy you’ll have to finish the race.

4. Switch on your inner cruise control

EcoBoost Marathon Story Focus 4 - CopyWhen the pace feels too easy, it’s common to get restless in the early miles. “Stick to your original plan and don’t get carried away by speeding up.” Dallis cautions that the slightest increase in speed will take up more of your energy stores, which can be extremely detrimental to your performance toward the end of the race.

“Think of it like switching on your inner cruise control.” When driving, this in-car tech feature is a great ally in saving fuel over long distances. It helps you maintain a constant speed, which means you don’t waste fuel by unnecessarily braking and accelerating. “If you need some pacing help in the marathon, try running with a group who are at the same skill level.” On the day, this will help maintain a steady pace that you can stick with.

5. Aerodynamics matter

“When I first started running, I ran with an exaggerated arm swing.” According to Dallis, this wasted a lot of energy and also caused unnecessary wind drag. “When cars are designed at Ford, we place great emphasis on the aerodynamics to help them slip smoothly through the air and the human body is no different.” Through the help of a running coach, Dallis later learned to correct his arm swing by running with his arms closer to his body. “It wasn’t easy to change at first, but once I did I noticed an improvement.”

6. Save your power for when you need it

When you commit to running long distances you need to be smart about managing your energy levels. If you pace yourself enough at the beginning of the race, you should have enough left to go harder at the end. During your marathon run, Dallis suggests saving that “oomph” for the last kilometer. “In some events, I’ve even sprinted the last hundred meters to set a personal best.”

By implementing these six practices into your run, Dallis believes that you’ll have the foundation to finish on the day. “The more you run, train and race – the better you’ll become at managing your energy levels,” says Dallis. As with anything he reminds us that efficiency is key. “When it comes to running a marathon, just remember that smooth and steady always wins the race.”

Petron Malaysia Launches Prepaid Fleet Card For SMEs

Petron Malaysia has launched the Petron Prepaid Fleet Card as an alternative to its regular ‘postpaid’ fleet card. This new prepaid card is targeted to SMEs (small-medium enterprises) with fewer vehicles and which may not necessarily meet the criteria for a credit limit with Petron.

When preloaded with value, the prepaid card provides the convenience and safety of a cashless transaction for fuel by a company’s employees. The card has a built-in microchip which stores vehicle/driver information and a PIN (personal identification number) must be keyed in to proceed with fueling up, thereby keeping the monetary value safe.

Petron Prepaid Fleet Card Launch Malaysia 2016For the business owner, this prepaid card allows for employee accountability as well as real-time online monitoring of usage. Credit limits, station locations and types of fuel can also be set and restricted; for example, you may not want your employees fueling up with Petron Blaze RON 100 petrol.

The prepaid cards can be used either at the fuel pump terminals or in the Treats store counter. Reloading of the prepaid card value can be done via cash deposit, cheque or Interbank Giro; payment via JomPAY is supposed to be implemented later. Every Ringgit spent via the Prepaid Fleet Card will also gain the customer 1 Petron Miles loyalty point for redemption.

Faridah Ali, Petron Malaysia Head of Retail“As part of our efforts to lead in giving customer convenience, we are delighted to bring this innovative payment option for our customers. Our mission is to help our customers manage their fleet better by enabling a cashless payment system. Our prepaid card comes with many benefits: it is secure, convenient, enables greater control and easy acceptance at any payment terminals,” said Puan Faridah Ali, Head of Retail.

Currently, the prepaid card is available as a ‘Single Card’ system but Petron has plans to launch a ‘Dual Card’ system later in the year which allows multiple drivers access to a fleet of vehicles i.e. it is easier to track who fueled up which vehicle.

Business owners can obtain the Prepaid Fleet Card application forms from any Petron service station. Forms should be submitted with the company’s Business Registration Form to Petron Malaysia headquarters. You should receive your cards in 2 weeks, upon successful application.

Petron currently has about 570 service stations nationwide.

Experts Remind To ‘ACT’ Following Baby’s Death

$

0

We have all heard it before but it is still heartbreaking to hear it again – the death of a baby/child due to heatstroke after being locked in a vehicle.

The latest heartbreaking is quite far away in California, involving an 11-month old boy who was left in the car for over an hour with the windows up; this is California’s first child heatstroke-related car death this year. Last month, we unfortunately had a similar incident in Johor where a 1-year old girl was left in the car for 5 hours. And you know Malaysian heat isn’t child’s play.

While these deaths may be unintentional, it still warrants serious attention and responsibility from adults to prevent such occurrences. One should NEVER leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows slightly opened or the air-conditioning running, so that you can go to the ATM, buy lunch, etc. Firstly, the window gap may be insufficient for proper airflow. Secondly, there’s no guarantee the car’s engine or air-conditioning will continuing running after you have left the car. And then of course, there’s the matter of the child’s safety.

090414_hotcar baby11n-1-web *temperatures in Fahrenheit

If you want to know what a child in this situation experiences, locking yourself in the car for 10 minutes with nothing running should give you an idea. Now imagine going through that for 60 minutes or maybe longer. So for those with young children, who might be cheeky enough to sneak into the car without your knowledge, it pays to always check your car before you drive off or after parking.

Child heatstroke - ACTSafety experts also encourage everyone to remember the acronym, “ACT“.

A” is to Avoid these situations in the first place i.e. never ever leave a child in a vehicle alone.
C” is for Creating reminders such as placing your laptop bag etc. next to your child so that you will notice and remember your child in the back seat once you reach your destination.
T” stands for Take action i.e. if you pass by a parked car with a lone child, take action to locate the driver or call the authorities. If the child doesn’t seem to be responding, take action by breaking the window.

But for this, it is always advisable to record yourself doing it and stating why you are taking such actions.

If you ever have to rescue a child in such a situation, bring the child to a cool/shaded area or douse them with cool water to bring down his/her body temperature.

Remember that it is NOT advisable to pour fluids into the mouth of an unconscious child.

During this weekend, the public can explore and test drive the all-new Koleos (including the full range of  Renault vehicles, like the Captur crossover, Fluence sedan and Clio GT Line hatchback). Those who complete a test drive will receive exclusive Renault merchandise.

All-New Renault Koleos Now In Showrooms_7 - CopyThe Koleos shares its platform with the Nissan X-Trail and similar to it but keeping in line with the Renault design strategy introduced by Laurens van den Acker, the Koleos has taut, muscular lines complemented by rugged SUV design cues like door protective moldings, large-diameter wheels and aluminum roof bars.

The 2.5L engine (170 PS & 226 Nm) and X-Tronic CVT are also shared with the X-Trail; 200 Nm of the engine’s torque is available from as low as 1,800 rpm for better response at low and mid-range engine speeds. 0 – 100 km/h timing is 9.5 seconds and speed tops out at 200 km/h. The Koleos comes only in 2WD option (front-wheel drive) which will save on weight and fuel consumption; 4WD capabilities are seldom used in this market segment.

While the X-Trail is a 7-seater SUV, the Koleos comes with only seating for 5. This allows for a more generous rear knee room of 289mm, as well as a good amount of head, shoulder and elbow room. Toyota Camry Hybrid Gets RM8k Rebate

The Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid is now being offered with an RM 8,000 cash rebate by UMW Toyota Motor. The Camry 2.5 Hybrid was the first executive sedan in its class to qualify as an Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV), according to the National Automotive Policy.

This EEV incentive was provided to locally assembled models that meet certain criteria and has enabled the Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid to be priced lower than it should have been. Without the EEV incentive, the actual retail price of the Camry 2.5 Hybrid would be over RM 250,000 but the incentive brought it down to around RM 175,000. The RM 8,000 cash rebate offered now further reduces the price (limited units, while stocks last).

Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid Instrument ClusterToyota has been designing and building hybrid cars since 1997. The Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive in the Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid is a result of 20 years of experience developing and producing hybrid systems. The Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive makes use of either the engine or electric motor at any time, or both when conditions require, thus optimizing both power as well as fuel economy.

The Camry 2.5 Hybrid’s system combines output from the 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder petrol engine and a small high-torque electric motor. The system produces a total output of 205 PS, with up to 213 Nm of torque available from the engine and 270 Nm from the electric motor. It is also possible to drive up to 40 km/h on electric power alone. Further, unlike some hybrid models which also shut down the air-conditioning when idle-stop shuts down the engine, the Camry Hybrid’s air-conditioning functions normally to continue cooling as the compressor powered electrically.

All Toyota passenger car models including the Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid, are covered by a 5-year full warranty with unlimited mileage. The warranty is also transferable if the car changes ownership within the first 5 years. Additionally, the hybrid battery pack has an 8-year warranty.
