Petronas Launches Urania With ViscGuard™ Commercial Vehicle Lubricant

PETRONAS Lubricants Marketing Malaysia (PLMM) has launched the PETRONAS Urania with ViscGuard™ in Malaysia. This is the company’s commercial vehicle lubricant (CVL) that is formulated to effectively guard against engine deposits build-up. This oil was first launched in Europe earlier in May.

This new range of diesel engine lubricants is designed to prevent abrasive wear and oxidation to maintain optimal oil viscosity which is crucial for commercial vehicles.

Regional Head of Asia, PETRONAS Lubricants International, Mohd Khalid Bin Mohamed Latiff said, “PETRONAS Urania with ViscGuard™ is the result of our global research efforts, conducted to understand our customers’ and the end consumers’ business and transportation needs.”

Chief Executive Officer, PETRONAS Lubricants Marketing Malaysia, Zubair Abdul Razak said, “We discovered that unplanned downtime is their biggest fear as it may lead to opportunity cost and loss of reputation. Thus, ensuring proper maintenance of their key asset, the engine, is extremely important. PETRONAS is committed to provide better solutions and services through understanding the importance of solving customer problems and ensuring that their business is profitable and sustainable.”

“PETRONAS Urania with ViscGuard™ not only guards the heart of a vehicle against engine deposits build-up, but also has a direct impact on the total cost of ownership for our customers. More importantly, it ensures that our customers are able to remain operational and meet their business commitment day after day,” said Zubair.

Engine deposits build-up is a common but underestimated problem which can lead to engine failure and unplanned downtime if not addressed. Soot and ash particles exist in all engines, a byproduct of diesel fuel combustion. Over time, they can cause oil thickening and further agglomerate to form larger particles that stick to critical engine parts. These ‘silent killers’ can starve critical engine parts which require necessary lubrication and increase engine wear and tear. Over time, and aggravated by the severe operating conditions that commercial vehicles undergo, it will eventually lead to total engine breakdown.

PETRONAS Urania with ViscGuard™ is engineered with robust oil film that disperses engine deposits, while maintaining optimal oil viscosity for longer engine life. When tested against latest industry standard, PETRONAS Urania with ViscGuard™ performed up to 89% (tested with Urania 3000 LS with ViscGuard™) better at maintaining oil viscosity integrity under high soot conditions. PETRONAS Urania with ViscGuard™ also performed up to 50% (tested with Urania 5000 E with ViscGuard™) better in controlling carbon build-up.

Mohd Khalid added, “Technology is our key differentiator at PETRONAS. We dedicated much of our focus to hone in and further sharpen our technological edge. This has allowed us to leverage our strong legacy in lubricants technology to innovate and deliver superior products and service offerings that meet the needs of the automotive industry and our end consumers.”

The 2016 Formula One PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix is happening next weekend from 30 September to 2 October at the Sepang International Circuit, following last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix which saw Nico Rosberg of Team Mercedes AMG Petronas extend his lead to 8 championship points over teammate Lewis Hamilton.

The Sepang race weekend will also see the GP2 and GP3 series as support races; both held for the first time in Malaysia. “The introduction of the GP2 and GP3 races adds an important element of local interest as we have two talented Malaysian drivers, Nabil Jeffri and Akash Neil Nandy competing this season. Besides encouraging more local fans to come to Sepang to support our boys, hosting these support races also contributes to the development of four-wheel motorsports in Malaysia. With greater local awareness of the support races, we hope to generate interest and sponsorship from the private sector so that more aspiring drivers can have the opportunity to hone their talents. In the long run, we hope that one day, Malaysia can produce a champion in the F1 Grand Prix,” said Dato’ Razlan Razali, Chief Executive Officer of SIC.

The action at the 18th installment of the Malaysia Grand Prix kicks off on 29 September with practice sessions for all the support races, which also includes the Porsche Carrera Cup Asiavand TCR International Series. The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, considered Asia’s premier sports car racing series, is a testing ground for fledgling talent and a showcase for top GT competitors with professionals competing wheel-to-wheel with privateers for glory. The TCR International Series is an international Touring Car championship targeted at C-category tin-top racing cars.

F1-Page-Banner

In line with the “Experience Redef1ned” theme, fans can expect the F1 Malaysia Grand Prix’s family carnival concept to offer new and expanded activities to suit every member of the family. “We want to encourage families to make the Formula One a weekend outing and also nurture more young Formula One fans,” Dato’ Razlan added.

To nurture passion for motorsports, the XTrack experience features a line-up of to do’s which include motorsport-related activities such as drifting, karting, a kids’ driving school, ATV rides and the return of the highly competitive Strider Cup. The whole family can enjoy the mini golf course, picnic facility, or check out the F1 Fan Zone Stage for exciting performance and activities throughout the day.

Motorsports fans will have opportunities to get close to your favorite teams and drivers, with the Drivers’ Autograph Session, Drivers’ Fan Forum and Malaysian School Pit Lane Walk. There are also souvenirs, memorabilia, limited edition merchandise, accessories and much more on offer at the SIC Mall area.

The Malaysia Professional Boxing Championship will be fought at the circuit on 1 October (7 pm – 11 pm). On race day (Sunday), the F1 drivers will parade around the track in classic cars, while celebrity songstress Elizabeth Tan will sing our national anthem before the race. Our Air Force will also be showcasing their talents in an air show. Stay back after the race for a concert headlined by Usher and featuring local artistes like Fazura and Natasha Sass.

2016 Proton Saga – Initial Impressions

$

The 3rd generation Proton Saga will be launched next week but those hanging around the internet often enough would have seen more than a few spyshots of the new car. Response to those spyshots have been generally positive and after having seen and driven the car in a model preview hosted by Proton at its test track, we can say those responses weren’t off the mark.

The new car is based on the current Saga’s platform (to save on development cost, which isn’t a bad thing since the Saga is an entry-level car) but with improvements made in nearly every aspect. The body is slightly longer to give the car better proportions and it definitely looks miles better than the outgoing model. On closer inspection there are various design aspects such as character lines on the body, the head and tail lights that give it a more cohesive and less of a budget look.

2016 Proton Saga Engine BayThere will be just one engine variant – 1.3L with VVT (variable valve timing) that produces 94 hp and 120 Nm, as shared with the Proton Iriz. Transmission choices are manual and CVT (continuously variable transmission).

We were offered all variants for a go around the test track and the 5-speed manual transmission was the favorite because of its willingness to rev. The manual transmission variant also has a higher top speed, slightly faster 0-100 km/h acceleration and slightly better fuel economy than the CVT. Unfortunately, it’s only offered as a minimalist ‘Standard’ variant which misses out on some features. Having said that, manual transmission cars sell in very low numbers in Malaysia so this complaint is irrelevant.

RIde and handling of the new Saga have been refined with tweaks done to the steering and suspension. NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) have also greatly improved with very acceptable noise intrusion into the cabin while driving beyond the speed limit (done at the test track, of course); we didn’t have to raise our voices to hold a conversation. According to Proton, the 3 hydraulic engine mountings (like the new Persona) also helped reduce vibration felt in the car.

2016 Proton Saga Dashboard 2016 Proton Saga Rear Seat 2016 Proton Saga Rear USB Charging Ports

Inside, the dashboard is essentially the same but updated; the round air vents are gone and the button layout has changed. Overall quality has improved. Proton has equipped the new Saga with 3 USB charging ports (1 in front, 2 for the rear) and a 12V socket, with the new generation of connected users in mind.

Also standard in the new Saga are dual airbags, ISOFIX, rear parking sensors, 4 power windows and Eco Drive Assist indicator. The rear seat-back is a 1-piece folding affair that increases the 420-liter boot space (bigger than the outgoing Saga) to 600 liters; a 60:40 split would be more practical but would add to cost. The range-topping Premium variant also gets a reverse camera with display integrated in the rear view mirror, like the Exora MPV.

Based on my brief stint with the new Saga, I can say that this is a good effort from Proton and should meet the expectations of entry-level car buyers. Some aspects like ride comfort and cabin quietness actually exceeded my expectations of a budget car. The price range isn’t expected to vary greatly from the current model so you have an indication. Wait for the launch and visit a Proton showroom to see, feel and test it (booking is also open starting today – 24 September). Until then, enjoy the images provided by Proton (no camera or video equipment were allowed at the preview).

Testing The New Honda Civic On Sabah Roads

$

0

It might seem a little off the norm for a car company to arrange for a media test drive for a sedan in Sabah, which is better known for its rugged terrain more suited for 4WD vehicles – kudos to Honda Malaysia though for doing the all-new Honda Civic drive in Kota Kinabalu – perhaps Honda senses that there are enough roads now, and want to put more effort to promote ‘normal’ vehicles there.

20160824_0441

It was a 3D/2N event and the routing covered many types of terrain, but the one that is most memorable to me would be the one where we did a quick dash from Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu Park, the push-off point for people who want to climb Malaysia’s highest mountain. This route gave us the opportunity to check out the new Honda Civic over the very challenging hill climb that starts from the roundabout at Tamparuli and ends at the Kinabalu Park itself.

1.5l turbo EngineTo bring everyone up to speed on the All-new Honda Civic, we must mention that the Civic comes in a totally new body, and has undergone an ‘engine down-sizing’ exercise. In line with a global trend to cut down emissions through using smaller capacity engines but supplementing the power through the use of a turbo-charger, Honda has followed suit by introducing a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine into the Civic range. This 1.5 litre engine produces 173PS and 220Nm of torque, and this variant replaces the outgoing Civic 2.0 litre which produces 157 PS, and 187Nm of torque. The new Civic has two variants with the 1.5 litre engine, in addition to a 1.8 litre variant that has a carry-over engine from the previous model. The 1.8 litre variant produces 141PS of power and 173Nm of torque, despite being of higher cubic capacity.

1.8 litre engine

Our car had three media, made up by Uncle Chips Yap, veteran writer from Motor Trader, young Eric Goh of AutoFreaks and yours truly. We started off in the 1.5 litre turbo-charged Civic. Eric, being the youngest, had to give in to seniority, and take the first stint out of Kota Kinabalu city to the outskirts – this part was the boring part, with heavy traffic, made worse by the right lane hoggers. Still, it was a good test of the drivability of the turbo-charged drive train, which drives the front wheels through a CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission).

Not being a real fan of CVT, I still need convincing that it is good – whilst acknowledging the fact that it really contributes to better fuel efficiency, and is smoother in operation, I still do not like the ‘rubber band’ effect that is typical of a CVT, but I cannot argue with the fuel consumption numbers. The good news is, CVT technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, and even as I sit and write this article, there are people working on making the CVT better somewhere in the world. My prejudice against CVT is a result of a poor early experience many years ago, and I must admit that the newer CVT’s are much better.

20160824_180318

The climb up the hills to Kinabalu Park is quite steep, with many sharp corners – the road is constantly being improved, and whilst the re-worked parts are generally wider, there are still many parts of the road that are narrow, with many blind corners. Whilst it can be fun driving up at high speed, it can turn ugly, so proper caution is advised, especially around the blind bends, and one must be ready to stop or take evasive action immediately.

The Civic on the hills of Kinabalu
The Civic on the hills of Kinabalu

It was agreed among the three of us that I take the second stint which starts from the pre-determined Driver change point at Shell Tamparuli and goes up for 40 kilometres to Nabalu Village, while Uncle Chips would take the last stage up to Kinabalu Park for lunch.

As with most turbocharged engines, the Honda Civic excelled on the uphill climb – power delivery was flawless. Whilst most naturally aspirated engines would be under some stress whilst going uphill and also suffer some ‘breathing’ problems due to the increase in altitude, turbocharged engines are not affected as much. The power from the 1.5 turbo is something you would appreciate when you are overtaking – much more so if the overtaking stretches are so much shorter due to the winding nature of the road.

Also much appreciated are the paddle-shifters, mounted in the ideal position just behind the steering wheel, within easy reach, in the conventional minus (-) left hand paddle and the plus (+) right hand paddle. The paddle shifters allow one to hold the gear ratios and keep the engine on the ‘boil’, making the drive more enjoyable. For certain, the paddle shifters make the CVT more fun – it will be somewhat detrimental to your overall fuel efficiency, but I think that driving is not always about fuel efficiency, and one should let one’s hair down every once in a while. So a final word on the CVT – the paddle shifters are the saving grace – with them, I can select the ‘gear’ I want to be in, and maintain some measure of control over the transmission.

20160826_095231

The Honda Civic is primarily a family sedan – it is well sprung, and the suspension set-up is what I would call ‘the firm side of comfortable’, which means that it is comfortable enough, yet can be ‘pushed’ a little for those who like fast driving. As far as I am concerned, the Civic took on the hills and conquered them without any problem at all. It ‘sits’ down firmly when you transfer the weight to the front just prior to entering any corner, and then it holds its attitude throughout.

I suppose Uncle Chips might have shared my thoughts on how great the Civic was – on the third stint from Nabalu to Kinabalu Park, the road was even more winding and the corners were even sharper, but he seemed to enjoy pushing the Civic to the limit, to the point of screeching tyres and huge amounts of sideways G-forces. The Civic took all of that in its stride, without any protest at all.

The new Civic continues to use an electrical power steering system – no issues here – if I didn’t tell you that the steering is electrically powered, you probably wouldn’t even know it. Steering response is precise, with just the right amount of feedback to the hands, and I felt very reassured at all times. Straight line stability, lane change stability and cornering stability get full marks from me – the Civic is very easy to drive.

For the return trip, we opted for the one and only 1.8 litre Civic available – I figured that it would be great to drive the 1.8 Civic as a comparison against the 1.5 litre turbo. Of course, going downhill, we didn’t need as much power, and neither did the 1.5 turbo Civics, and needless to say, the 1.8 Civic performed just as well. Other than the difference in the engine performance, the 1.8 litre Civic did just as well as the 1.5 turbo did.

20160826_094220

Because everybody else was tired, I got to drive all the way to the city of Kota Kinabalu. Down in the lowland area, I got a chance to check out just how adequate the 1.8 litre engine was with its new CVT.  Moving back into what I said earlier, the CVT makes for better fuel efficiency, and after driving it for close to an hour, it is my conclusion that the Honda Civic 1.8 is more than adequate for approximately 80 percent of the people who are likely to want to buy it. Of course there will always be those who want to top specs all the time and still go for the 1.5 turbo, which is perfectly all right too.

All things said and done, the question remains as to which one should one buy – my answer would be – both are good. Your final choice of variant, whether it is the 1.5 Turbo or the naturally-aspirated 1.8 litre Civic, would be dependent on whether you believe you need the additional power or not.

3rd Generation Saga Launched by Proton

Wednesday, 28 September 2016 – Thirty-five years after the very first Proton Saga was introduced in Malaysia, Proton Holdings Bhd launched the third generation Proton Saga today. It was nostalgic indeed, and those of us that are old enough to remember could associate ourselves with the many images of the first Saga that were flashed during the launch event.

Proton has come a far way since 1985, and the progress is seen on this third generation Saga that is home grown, and incorporates many new features – it is also mooted as the best value for money sedan in Malaysia, what the Chinese may refer to as ‘Pheng, Leng, Cheng”, which is a Cantonese expression for something that is affordable and worthwhile.

“We have certainly come a long way since the introduction of the first Saga, over 30 years ago. A lot of improvements, enhancements and refinements have gone into the making of the new Saga and we believe the new Saga will appeal to all Malaysians, especially those looking to buy a car for the first time or as a practical second car. We have incorporated a stylish design, practicality, safety, convenience and comfort into the country’s best value for money sedan,” said Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali, Chief Executive Officer of Proton.

Best Value for money Sedan in Malaysia

The new Saga is based on the same platform as the outgoing 2nd Generation Saga which was introduced in 2008. Thus the under-pinnings such as the suspension mounting points and the floor panels are the same, but the ‘top hat’ or the body on top of the floor pan has been totally re-designed.

It is common practice in the automotive industry to re-use platforms as long as they are still relevant, and can meet the requirements of the auto maker or the safety regulations. In addition, it also reduces the cost of development, with the benefit of more affordable retail prices for the end-user. According to our research, the Saga platform is known for its high rigidity and durability. The Saga platform has been used for the last eight years, so we can be assured of its quality and durability.

The Saga is said to be in the A+ segment (bigger than the A segment but smaller than the B segment). With a wheelbase measuring 2,465mm versus the Persona wheelbase of 2,555mm, the Saga is slightly smaller, and I was told that as part of the overall product line-up rationalization plan, the Saga is powered only by the 1.3 litre Proton engine, now upgraded with VVT (Variable Valve Timing), which replaces the IAFM intake – fuel consumption is claimed to be improved by 12 – 14 percent, and is claimed at 5.4l/100km.

Owners of the new Saga will be able to experience a quieter cabin, thanks to the introduction of a 3-point mounting system for the engine; the change in body has also resulted in some changes in dimensions – the new Saga is 74mm longer at 4,331mm, and 9mm wider at 1,689mm. Luggage space has also increased slightly from 413 litres to 420 litres. With the new body, the Saga has achieved an improved rating of 4-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating across all its variants compared to 3-stars rating previously. Safety features for the new Saga include two front airbags, ISOFIX and top tether, front and reverse sensor. The Executive and Premium variants get additional features such as ABS, Electronic BrakeForce Distribution (EBD) as well as Brake Assist (BA). The Premium variant is further enhanced with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control (TC), Hill-Hold Assist (HHA), as well as a reverse camera.

The Saga variants and their prices (Peninsular Malaysia) are as follows:-

  1. Standard, (Manual Transmission) – RM36,800
  2. Standard, (CVT) –              RM39,800
  3. Executive,(CVT) –              RM42,800
  4. Premium, (CVT) –              RM45,800

YSK_9738We have actually driven the new Saga on the Proton test track last week in a hush-hush preview programme, and everything looked good – the car handles very well, is quieter, and power is adequate for a 1.3 litre sedan. We shall also be participating in a lengthier media test drive very soon in the future – stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, go to any Proton showroom in the country for a closer view of the Saga, and perhaps go for a test drive.

New Saga is based on the previous Saga platform, but certainly looks so much more refined. BHPetrol Launches Improved Euro 2M and Euro 5 Diesels

Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd, the distributor and marketer of BHPetrol fuels in Malaysia, has launched its Infiniti Diesel improved with a new generation of additives. Infiniti Diesel will be available in Euro 2M and Euro 5 standards; the Euro 2M diesel can be found at all BHPetrol stations (currently numbering more than 320 nationwide) while the Euro 5 variant is available at 105 stations. That means stations carrying the Euro 5 Infiniti diesel still offers the Euro 2M fuel.

The new-generation additives for BHPetrol’s Infiniti diesel comes from a German supplier and in specifying for its improved diesel, BHPetrol has opted to go full-force with the maximum treat rate recommended by the German additives manufacturer, although a minimum treat rate is sufficient. The maximum treat rate means there is 2.5 times the additives compared to the minimum treat rate.

“Yes, this means we spend more on additives for our new fuel but we believe in giving our customers the highest quality of fuel in Malaysia and this means providing diesel that has the most effective ‘Clean Up’ performance,” said Mr James Khoo, Retail Director of BHPetrol, a sentiment also shared by Mr Tan Kim Thiam, Managing Director of BHPetrol.

The effectiveness of the new additives compared to the older additives were independently tested according to the Coordinating European Council (CEC) standards, on both older engines and newer direct injection engines; the test engines were the PSA Group’s XUD 9 (old) and DW 10 (new). The tests compared the new additives’ ability in the ‘Clean Up’ and ‘Keep Clean’ performance. ‘Clean Up’ refers to the ability to remove existing/old deposits while ‘Keep Clean’ refers to the ability to prevent new deposits from forming.

BHPetrol Infiniti Diesel 2016 BHPetrol Infiniti Diesel BHPetrol Infiniti Diesel Test Graph

So why are these 2 attributes important? In modern commonrail direct injection engines, the piezo fuel injectors which ‘shoot’ the fuel into the combustion chamber have very small holes (measured in microns i.e. millionth of a meter) and very specific fuel spray pattern to ensure a more efficient burn for reduced fuel consumption and emissions. When these microscopic holes (with diameter the size of human hair) are blocked by deposits, the diesel engine will not perform at its optimum. This will compromise power delivery and fuel economy as well as cause other problems such as starting difficulties, poor idling, excessive smoke and even engine damage.

For modern diesel engines, OEM specifications state that the power loss in these engines must be less than 2%, which can be achieved with the minimum additive treat rate. But as BHPetrol uses the maximum treat rate, it claims that tests reveal that this effectively restores any power lost and thus exceeds the OEM specification.

BHPetrol Infiniti Diesel Launch 2016“Once again, BHPetrol is at the forefront of bringing high quality fuels to Malaysian motorists. With this new generation of additives in BHPetrol Infiniti Diesel Euro 2M and Euro 5, owners of diesel vehicles – especially those with the latest engines – will enjoy all the performance that the engines have been designed to provide because the engines will be cleaner. If an engine has been running on fuel with older additives, then switching to new BHPetrol Diesel will see it running better within a short time as the new additives we now put into our fuel also have the best ‘Clean Up’ performance,” added Mr Khoo.

The BHPetrol Infiniti Euro 2M Diesel is currently priced at RM 1.70 per liter while the Infiniti Euro 5 Diesel is currently RM 1.80 per liter, as determined by the government’s managed float system.

On the government’s proposed use of B10 biodiesel, BHPetrol commented that very likely Euro 5 diesel will continue using the B7 blend (7% palm oil) while the Euro 2M will use B10, if this proposal becomes reality.

Naza Italia Launches 4-Seater Ferrari GTC4Lusso T

Kuala Lumpur, 29 September 2016 – Naza Italia, the official Ferrari importer for Malaysia, revealed Ferrari’s 4-seater ‘Executive’ car, the GTC4Lusso T today, in tandem with the model’s debut at the Paris Motor Show.

The Ferrari GTC4Lusso T is quite a mouthful to verbalize, and will take some effort to recall, but it will be remembered as Ferrari’s first attempt to go into the ‘executive’ market, perhaps as a response to market demands after sampling the Quattroporte and the Panamera. An earlier version, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso (without the T at the end) was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier in the year, with a 680 horsepower, 6.3 litre V12 engine, with all-wheel steer and all-wheel drive. We note with interest that Ferrari still refuses to open up another two doors, opting instead to retain a two-door configuration.

20160929_151359 20160929_152553 20160929_151557

Prompted by the notion of a car with less power but more drivability and practicality for daily usage, Ferrari have put into the GTC4Lusso T, a 3.9 litre twin turbo engine that has less power on paper, 610 horsepower, a 50 horsepower drop, probably the maximum power drop the stubborn Ferrari engineers are prepared to sacrifice for the marketing department. The earlier version GTC4Lusso had all-wheel drive and 4-wheel steer – the GTC4Lusso T comes with only rear-wheel drive but retains the 4-wheel steer (4-WS). The deletion of the all-wheel drive components has resulted in some weight savings.

Power is transmitted to the road via a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, and Ferrari have a unique boost management system that maintains linear acceleration through the gears – this is to trim away the turbo lag at lower engine speeds while limiting the power peaks at high boost to maintain a driving sensation that is similar to that of Ferrari’s naturally aspirated engines.

The base price of the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T starts at RM1,088.000 (excluding duty and customization options).

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet

So the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team didn’t take Sepang by storm last weekend. But Mercedes-Benz Malaysia certainly is creating one in the local automotive market by going topless with its launch of 2 “Dream Cars Collection” models.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet Malaysia 2016“The Mercedes-Benz Dream Cars Collection is a collection of the most exciting cars available in the market today. Up to now, there has been something missing in our collection – that is why we bring you another exclusive option for the connoisseurs of dream cars, the C-Class Cabriolet and the SLC Roadster.” says Mark Raine, Vice President, Sales and Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

The first of the 2 Dream Cars models introduced was the C-Class Cabriolet, the first cabriolet launched by Mercedes-Benz in Malaysia. This is the soft-top version of the C-Class Coupe and comes in 3 variants – C 200 Cabriolet, C 250 Cabriolet and C 300 Cabriolet. As this model is parked under the Dream Cars category, it’s not something you buy with your head. The variants are priced at RM 358,888, RM 388,888 and RM 443,888 respectively, inclusive of a 4-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet Launch Malaysia 2016Common to Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the C-Class Cabriolet range carries the same drivetrain (2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic gearbox) albeit in different states of tune. The C 200 Cabriolet produces 184 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 300 Nm of torque between 1,200 – 4,000 rpm; the C 250 Cabriolet, 211 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 350 Nm @ 1,200 – 4,000 rpm; and the C 300 Cabriolet, 245 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 370 Nm @ 1,300 – 4,000 rpm. 0-100 km/h sprint times are claimed at 8.2 seconds, 6.9 and 6.4 respectively, while trivial fuel consumption figures are 6.2 l / 100 km, 6.4 l / 100 km and 6.8 l / 100 km.

Mercedes-Benz C 250 Cabriolet Malaysia 2016The draw of this model is of course, open-top driving and the soft-top opens and closes in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The roof comes in black fabric in the basic variant but there is the option of a multi-layer acoustic soft top in dark brown, dark blue, red or black, which reduces noise intrusion and maintains optimal climate comfort. Dropping the roof will reduce boot space to 285 liters, from 360. With the roof up, the Cabriolet boasts a Cd figure of 0.28.

The suspension on the Cabriolet is 15 mm lower than the sedans; C 200 Cabriolet is fitted with steel springs and a selective damping system while the C 250 and C 300 get sport suspension with firmer springs and dampers, including the Sports Direct-Steer system for better agility.

The Mercedes-Benz SLC is the other model to join the Dream Cars range. As the successor to the SLK, the SLC roadster is available in 2 variants namely, the SLC 200 and SLC 300 priced at RM 398,888 and RM 468,888 respectively.

Both variants use the same enginMercedes-Benz SLC Launch Malaysiae found in the C-Class Cabriolet i.e. the turbocharged 2-liter with 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic gearbox. However, as the SLC is a lightened 2-seater roadster compared to the 4-seater cabriolet, it has faster acceleration (6.9 seconds and 5.8 seconds respectively) and lower fuel consumption (5.7 l / 100 km and 5.8 l / 100 km respectively).

Mercedes-Benz SLC Malaysia 2016Appearance-wise, the SLC features redesigned front and rear. The diamond front grille is standard and the tail lights are LED; the headlights are intelligent LED systems. The car sports and AMG-style flat-bottomed steering wheel and gear shifter. For interior trim, there is a choice of light (standard) or dark aluminum trim with carbon fiber finish.

The SLC roadster comes with a folding hard-top roof which can be operated at speeds up to 40 km/h, unlike the Cabriolet which can work up to 50 km/h. This electrohydraulic roof also comes with a semi-automatic boot separator as part of the KEYLESS-GO function; if the separator is in the upper position for increased boot space, it will lower automatically when the roof is opened.

A special feature of the roof on the SLC 300 is the MAGIC SKY CONTROL which electrically lightens or darkens the glass roof at the touch of a button, to either let in more light or shut it out. Boot space is an acceptable 335 liters.

As for standard kit, both variants come with the Dynamic Handling package, adaptive damping suspension, Direct-Steer system, sports exhaust, 18″ light alloy wheels, Active Brake Assist, PRE-SAFE system, Parktronic parking assist, reverse camera, memory function for seats, steering and mirrors, Airguide wind deflectors, Apple CarPlay and Audio 20 CD head unit with Garmin Map Pilot. The SLC 300 adds on KEYLESS-GO entry, DVD changer, Harmon Kardon 7 surround sound system, COMAND Online, Nappa leather upholstery and climate control.

Like the C-Class Cabriolet, the SLC is also available with Mercedes-Benz Financial’s Agility Financing, which guarantees future value of the car.

Toyota Vios Now EEV Certified

The 2016 Toyota Vios has gotten more than a (minimal) cosmetic upgrade and an additional variant. There are now 6 trims to choose from:

1.5 TRD Sportivo with CVT           RM 96,400
1.5 GX with CVT (new variant)    RM 92,800
1.5 G with CVT                              RM 89,800
1.5 E with CVT                              RM 83,900
1.5 J with CVT                               RM 79,800
1.5 J with 5-speed Manual            RM 76,500

The Vios now comes with a new engine and transmission that gets it EEV (Energy Efficient Vehicle) certification. The biggest change is the 1.5-liter 2NR-FE engine, replacing the old 1NZ-FE, and now features Dual VVT-i with variable valves on the exhaust side; previous engine only had variable valves on the intake side.

Image converted using ifftoanyToyota also uses Iridium spark plugs in this all-aluminum engine which features combustion chambers with a tapered squish design to enhance the combustion process. Oil jets are on-hand to provide more efficient lubrication for the pistons.

Mated to a 7-speed CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with torque converter instead of the old 4-speed automatic, Toyota claims the new powertrain gives 18% better fuel economy. The improved fuel economy comes with a small sacrifice on power – 107 PS and 140 Nm versus 109 PS and 141 Nm, but response from the improved engine and the Altis-derived CVT (with Sport Sequential Shiftmatic mode) should negate that. An Eco Indicator on the instrument cluster lights up to aid efficient driving.

Toyota Vios CVT with 7-Speed Vios 1.5G Interior Toyota Vios VSC

In terms of safety, Toyota has made VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) available in all variants. Other safety features include ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, 2 front airbags, ISOFIX and a knee brace below the dashboard to prevent the driver’s legs from injury.

The exterior remains nearly identical save for the mid-bumper LED daytime running lights for all variants. The new 1.5GX variant has a new aerokit which is available as an option for the 1.5E and 1.5J; this variant also comes with 15″ alloy wheels. The Vios TRD Sportivo also receives a new aerokit design with blackened grille. Additionally, the Vios TRD Sportivo, 1.5GX and 1.5G are fitted with projector headlights but all variants get a manual leveling feature, as well as smart entry and push button start.

All variants but the 1.5E and 1.5J get leather upholstery. The top 4 variants are fitted with a DVD-AVX 2-DIN head unit with a 6.8″ touchscreen with voice control, DVD player and reverse camera view while the 1.5J gets a 2-DIN unit with Bluetooth connectivity. Other standard kit includes powered retractable door mirrors with integrated turn signals, rear center armrest and acoustic glass for the windscreen and side windows for a quieter cabin. The engine cover has also been improved to reduce noise and vibration.

Vios 1.5GX Interior Vios 1.5 TRD Sportivo Interior

The range-topping Vios 1.5 TRD Sportivo features a new front bumper spoiler, scuff plate on all door sills, exclusive carpet mats, a sporty meter panel with Multi Information Display (MID) and leather wrapped steering wheel with red stitching. The seats are also finished in black and red stitching with perforated combination leather.

Meanwhile, the other Vios variants (except 1.5E & 1.5J) now comes with Toyota Premium Security & Solar Film developed and manufactured using nanotechnology methods. The film complies with JPJ regulations and is certified by PUSPAKOM. The film also includes a security layer to delay grass breakage besides providing protection from the sun.

Vios buyers can choose to upgrade their cars with the following optional accessories:

  • 5-piece aerokit for 1.5E & 1.5J
  • DVD-AVN with 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone connectivity, GPS navigation and reverse camera
  • DVD-AVX for 1.5J only – 2-DIN 6.8″ touchscreen, voice recognition and reverse camera
  • Window tint for 1.5E & 1.5J – Toyota Essential Solar Film (7-year warranty) OR Toyota Premium Security & Solar Film

All Toyota Vios are covered by a 5-year factory warranty with unlimited mileage.

Earlier we had highlighted Sony Corp’s plan to supply batteries to the automotive industry, and the latest news is Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd, the Kyoto-based electronics components supplier which already owns some shares in Sony’s battery division, has agreed to buy most of the Sony’s battery business with plans to boost automotive-related revenue.

The purchase is expected to be completed by the end of March 2017 for an undisclosed amount. In the year ending March 2016, the battery division racked up sales of 160 billion Yen (approximately US$ 1.56 billion).

Murata supplies components to the smartphone industry and calls Apple, Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd its clients. Approximately 60% of its revenue comes from this industry but Murata is seeking alternative revenue streams to safeguard itself from industry downturns.

CEO Tsuneo Murata aims to have the automotive battery business contribute 20% – 30% of group revenue in 10 years’ time, from the current 13%.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia just launched the C 350 e plug-in hybrid at the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition (IGEM) to replace the C 300 at the top of the C-Class range. The locally assembled C 350 e is available initially in Avantgarde Line at RM 289,888. Subsequently, the C 350 e will get an interior and wheel upgrade to AMG Line in line with an upgrade in price tag to RM 294,888 and ultimately to full AMG Line inside and out for RM 299,888. In full AMG Line, the electric sunroof will be upgraded to a panoramic one.

Mercedes-Benz C350e Hybrid Front WheelThe C 350 e is differentiated from the non-hybrid C-Class by the subtle blue highlights in the intelligent LED headlights, the blue “Plug-In Hybrid” badges on the fenders, charging port lid in the rear bumper and most noticeably, the blue front brake calipers.

As a plug-in hybrid, the C 350 e relies on 2 powerplants for propulsion. The combined output of these is equivalent to 279 hp and 600 Nm of torque, which are figures of the sports car realm. The 0 – 100 km/h sprint is claimed at 5.9 seconds and speed tops out at 250 km/h. Handling the power is a 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission which incorporates the electric motor and an additional clutch between the combustion engine and electric motor. In all-electric mode, this clutch decouples the 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine from the drivetrain. This clutch also takes the role of a torque converter.

The advantage of a hybrid powertrain is the low fuel consumption of 2.1 l / 100 km and the 6.2 kWh battery gives the car the ability to drive 31 km in all-electric mode. The car can also reach a speed of 130 km/h in pure electric drive. The battery pack is located in the boot and results in a lower cargo volume of 335 liters, down from 480 liters.

The hybrid system of the C 350 e manages the battery’s charge and discharge cycles via anticipatory driving e.g. if your destination is entered into the navigation system, the car decides which mode to use to maximize energy efficiency. This can include charging up and saving the battery’s energy until you reach an urban or high traffic area so that full electric mode can be used. Energy is also recovered and stored during braking and coasting.

The braking is a 2-step process. When the brake pedal is depressed, it is the electric motor which initially slows the car down and acts as an alternator to charge the battery at this time. When the brake pedal is depressed with more pressure, the conventional braking takes over. Driving efficiency is also aided by the haptic accelerator pedal which provides feedback via the driver’s foot.

The range-topping C 350 e gets all the features like ATTENTION ASSIST, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS (which can undertake autonomous braking at up to 200 km/h), PRE-SAFE system, Park Assist with PARKTRONIC, DYNAMIC SELECT, 5 driving modes, Comfort Direct-Steer system, KEYLESS-GO, run-flat tires, 19″ light alloy wheels, THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, as well as AIRMATIC air suspension and Pre-Entry Climate Control cabin pre-conditioning. This pre-conditioning helps cool the cabin to a specific temperature via the key fob, at a pre-set time entered via the instrument panel or by using the control button, without having the need to start the engine.

The C 350 e comes with a charging cable; the wall-box charger is an option.
