Mitsubishi Outlander – Latest Entry into the Cross-Over SUV market

The Mitsubishi Outlander launched recently by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia was actually launched in 2013, and what we have got here now is the face-lifted version that was launched at the end of 2015, so for all practical intents and purposes, it can be considered a new model. Based on the Grandis platform, the Outlander is the third generation model since its initial introduction in 2001 as the Mitsubishi Airtrek. Those motoring enthusiasts who have driven the Mitsubishi Airtrek would have many fond memories – that 2.0 litre engine with a turbo charger, de-tuned a little from the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO of World Rally Championship fame was what gave the Airtrek plenty of power, and although fuel consumption wasn’t its best friend, the power made up for it all.

Mitsubishi Outlander SUV Malaysia Mitsubishi Outlander Front Mitsubishi Outlander 2016

Mitsubishi Outlander EngineThe Mitsubishi Outlander is fitted with the 2.4 litre 4B12 engine, which is derived from the 2.0-litre engine found in the Lancer and Proton Inspira, but bored out by 2 mm to 88mm, and stroked to 97mm to derive the additional 0.4 litre displacement. This is the same engine that is found in the Grandis. As a point in passing, the 4B12 is what Mitsubishi calls its ‘world engine’, and can be found in certain Hyundai, Chrysler and Citroen vehicles. Equipped with Mitsubishi’s MIVEC (read as variable valve timing), and carrying an aluminium alloy block, the 4B12 has been in production since 2007 and is highly reliable.

In order to keep up with the competition, Mitsubishi have loaded the Outlander with the latest tech available, in terms of features and specifications to make it one of the best value for money SUVs available in the Malaysian market.

For RM 173+k, you get a seven-seater, 2.4 litre power, a six-speed CVT with paddle shifters, Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control (TC), Hill Start Assist (HSA), seven airbags, a touchscreen audio with reverse camera, electric tailgate, LED lights with DRL, Multi-Select 4WD system and alloy rims. In addition, you get leather seats all round, and an 8-way electrically adjustable seat for the driver.

The Autoworld editorial team took the Mitsubishi Outlander for a test drive, and we share our views with our readers here.

In terms of power, the 167 PS of power delivered by the Outlander should be enough for the majority of people who are likely to buy it. As a naturally aspirated engine, the torque is actually quite commendable at 222 Nm, and again it should be enough for most people.

The weakness, I feel, would be the CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission), which gives the Outlander a ‘rubber band’ effect upon hard acceleration. Because of the inherent mass of 1,530 kg kerb weight, and close to 1.8 tons when loaded up with three passengers and a bit of camera equipment, overcoming inertia is the biggest problem – the transmission steps down while the engine revs up, and it takes forever for the speed to catch up. Bearing in mind of course, that when the speed eventually catches up, or when you ease off on the throttle, the CVT reverts to the highest possible gear ratio to give you better fuel economy.

Mitsubishi Outlander Gear Shifter MalaysiaFrom my research, there is a 6-speed automatic available elsewhere in the world for the Outlander, but the powers that be have selected the CVT for Malaysia. Here’s the deal – if you are like the 80 percent of drivers in the world who drive sedately for 80 percent of the time in the city, the CVT would probably be the better bet – it will definitely be more economical on fuel. However if you are like me, who likes to put pedal to the metal most of the time, then look at something else to purchase.

Mitsubishi obviously also tried to mitigate the fuel consumption by other means – they have lightened the chassis by 200kg through using high tensile steel in the body – it is by no means any less safe, as is a RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body. In addition, Mitsubishi have put in an electric power steering system, and a Multi-Select 4WD system that allows the user to select one of three modes – 4WD ECO, that provides drive mostly to the front, with the rear engaged only when necessary; 4WD AUTO, which is useful for wet conditions, as this mode optimises the power split between front and rear wheels; and 4WD LOCK, which is equivalent to full 4WD, great for off-road conditions.

Mitsubishi Outlander RoofWe did take it for a little bit of an off-road excursion, and therefore can vouch that it would be very suitable for any minor off-road use that you might need the Outlander for. Zachary Ho took the Outlander off-road to test its capabilities and he commented that it held up well with enough torque in the low rev range and ground clearance to get through some rough and muddy terrain. The 190 mm ground clearance gives it excellent off-road performance. As he was alone and didn’t have enough courage, his off-roading was on the milder side. Also, our test car wasn’t equipped with proper off-road tyres. Anyway, it is probably more than what most Outlander owners would put their own vehicles through.

For our drive, fuel consumption ranged from 10.8 to 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres when driven sedately; pushing the Outlander hard can be quite expensive – we could see the fuel consumption numbers going up to as high as 14.7 litres per 100 kilometres. The six-step CVT never could get up to its top level, so clearly the Outlander is not for one who is always in a hurry. But the paddle shifters are still a nice feature to have.

Mitsubishi Outlander Malaysia Rear SuspensionOverall comfort is pretty good – the four wheel independent suspension, made up of MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear with coil springs all round, is very similar to that found on the Lancer EVO, but with stronger and larger members. Thus overall handling, thanks to Mitsubishi’s rally experience in building suspension systems, is pretty good.

All things said and done, we think that there is a place for the Outlander in the hearts of many Malaysian users – those who want a robust but comfortable SUV with loads of features, those who want a safe and reliable vehicle with a proven engine, and those who want a vehicle that is good value for money.

The Raya exodus is quickly approaching and millions of journeys home are being planned. For Malaysians, the balik kampung journey is an important one: it means time with family, to celebrate and to appreciate life’s blessings. This year, that journey could mean additional blessings for children in need.

In conjunction with this year’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, Shell will donate 1 sen (RM 0.01) for every 1 litre fuel pumped at any Shell fuel station nationwide for three days starting tomorrow – 1, 2 and 3 of July (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).

Shell Malaysia CSR - Thank You (2)The funds collected will be channeled to help improve and transform the lives of disadvantaged children across the country.

This is the second year Shell Malaysia is doing this. When it started last year in 2015, Shell was able to provide funding for five organisations focused on improving children’s welfare.

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Malaysian motorists, these organisations were able to provide additional educational programmes, renovate facilities, and upgrade office equipment.

“This year, Shell wishes to continue the journey of empowering children to build a better future by giving them a chance to discover their talents and seize opportunities to reach their full potential. Based on the number of lives we’ve impacted last year, we are continuing our efforts and look to Malaysians to fuel up as they make their journeys home. Together with our partners and customers, we hope to make it bigger and better this year,” said Datuk Azman Ismail, Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn. Bhd. and Shell Timur Sdn. Bhd.

2016 is also a milestone year for Shell as it celebrates its 125th anniversary in Malaysia. This charity drive will kick the anniversary celebrations into high gear. Sharing the inspiration behind this, Datuk Azman explained, “Shell has been in Malaysia for 125 years, impacting lives and growing with the nation. We’ve journeyed with Malaysia and Malaysians. We believe in inspiring continuous progress and providing opportunities for a better tomorrow. What better way to celebrate this landmark year than giving back to our community!”

This year, with the support of customers and partners, Shell will raise funds to be distributed to six selected charitable organisations: Persatuan Dyslexia Malaysia, Pusat Harian Kanak-Kanak Spastik Bandar Ipoh, Persatuan Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Terencat Akal Johor Bahru, Yayasan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Kelantan (Rumah Putera Dan Puteri Harapan), Seri Mengasih Centre Sabah and Lembaga Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Sarawak.

“Each contribution can make a difference and together we are able to amplify that. The simple act of filling up your tank could translate to blessings to underprivileged children in need and we hope this also inspires you to share this charity drive with your family and friends,” Datuk Azman also said.

Furthermore, with the goal of raising donations beyond the simple act of fueling up, this year’s charity drive gives BonusLink members an option to convert their points to donations. For every 100 points, BonusLink members can contribute an amount of 1 Ringgit (RM 1.00) to further help in raising funds for the organisations.

Recalls For Toyota Prius And Lexus CT200h In Malaysia

$

0

In light of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) filing two global recalls on selected Toyota and Lexus models, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) is initiating a Special Service Campaign (SSC) for all Toyota Prius and Lexus CT200h sold in Malaysia.

Toyota Prius Lexus CT200h 2011

The first recall involves the curtain shield airbag issue affecting more than 3,500 units of Toyota Prius and about 1,700 units Lexus CT200h. The Toyota Prius units were produced between April 2009 and April 2012 while the Lexus CT200h units were produced between December 2010 and April 2012.

In these two models, the curtain shield airbags are located in the left and right side roof rails. Each curtain shield airbag inflator is composed of compressed gas in one chamber and propellant in another; these chambers are welded together. Some inflators could have a small crack in the welded area. If the crack spreads over time, the welded portion could separate. If an inflator separates, the curtain shield airbag could partially deploy and the inflator could be ejected into the vehicle interior. If an occupant is present in the vehicle, there is an increased risk of injury.

During the SSC, the cars will be fitted with retention brackets on the curtain shield airbag inflators. These retention brackets serve as protectors to prevent the inflator chambers from being ejected into the cabin. The work will take approximately 2 – 4 hours, subject to the work schedule at the service centre.

The second recall is on the evaporative fuel emission control or charcoal canister also on the Toyota Prius and Lexus CT200h. The number of units affected are around 6,000 units of Toyota Prius (produced between April 2009 and November 2013) and 3,000 units of Lexus CT200h (produced between December 2010 and December 2013).

This recall relates to an evaporative fuel emissions control unit (canister) mounted in the fuel tank. There is a possibility that cracks could develop in the coating of the emissions channel due to improper shaping of portions of the channel. As a result of this condition, the cracks could expand over time and, eventually, fuel may leak from these cracks when the car has a full tank of fuel.

During the SSC, the fuel suction plate sub-assembly will be replaced. The work will take approximately 2 – 3 hours, subject to the work schedule at the service centre.

No other Toyota or Lexus models are affected by these two specific issues.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified of the SSC and requested to bring their cars to an authorised Toyota or Lexus service centre for the necessary remedies to be carried out. Owners will not be charged anything for the labour and parts involved as UMW Toyota Motor will bear all costs.

Owners who do not receive any notification can obtain clarification by calling the Toyota and Lexus free-phone at 1800-8-TOYOTA (869682) / 1800-8-LEXUS (53987).

You can also visit any authorised Toyota or Lexus service centres for assistance.

Continental Tyre PJ Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CTM) has announced the launch of an industry-first warranty programme which covers tyres for 5 years from the date of purchase.

All passenger light truck (PLT) tyres come with Continental’s global standard warranty of two years from the date of purchase by end-customers and CTM is offering an additional three years extended warranty in the Malaysian market to turn it into a 5-Year Warranty from date of purchase.

5 years warranty logo 02.pngThis 5-Year Warranty from date of purchase for end-customers is on condition that the date of purchase is within 5 years of date of manufacture.

Previously, CTM had a 5-year warranty on PLT tyres but it covered from the date of manufacture. But from 1 January, 2016 this has been changed to a 5-Year Warranty from date of purchase so you need not look for the newest batch of tyres (like previously) when you make your purchase as the warranty now covers you for 5 years from the day you buy them.

This 5-Year Warranty applies to all Continental, Dunlop and Viking PLT tyres that are sold in Malaysia only and the original receipt/proof of purchase must be kept and presented for any claims. PLT tyres refer to all vehicle tyres designed for passenger vehicles weighing three tonnes or less, INCLUDING radial motorcycle tyres, so this warranty covers non-commercial passenger car and motorcycle tyres.

Warranty terms require that any adjustment made pursuant to this warranty shall be based on the unused remaining tyre tread depth (RTD), and any product adjustment under this warranty will be considered upon inspection of the tyre by an accredited representative of CTM.

“We are proud to be the first tyre manufacturer in Malaysia to launch this extended warranty, 5-Year Warranty from the date of purchase for our consumers. We are confident of the performance of our products against manufacturing defects that we decided to offer consumers this extended warranty. With this warranty programme, we aim to deliver the highest level of confidence and customer satisfaction and be the most trusted tyre supplier,” said by Mr. Cameron Wilson, Managing Director of CTM.

More information on the 5-Year Warranty and warranty policy can be found at www.continental-tyres.com.my.

Land Rover Defender Making A Comeback?

The Land Rover Defender, which was officially discontinued in January this year after a 67-year production run could be making a comeback if the rumors are true.

James RatcliffeAccording to The Times UK, chemicals tycoon James Ratcliffe had started discussions with executives in Jaguar Land Rover, which is owned by India’s Tata Motors. Ratcliffe, founder-chairman of the Ineos Group is reportedly worth $6.2 billion and is said to have bought one of the last Defenders produced.

The Defender was discontinued as Jaguar Land Rover could not keep up with the stricter emissions standards and crash regulations.

However, it is unclear if Ratcliffe is injecting capital to revive the production of the Defender or is interested to buy the intellectual property or parts of the production line.

Defective Airbag – What To Do In The Meantime

So you either got a notification from the manufacturer of your car or read an automotive website or publication to inform you your car has a potentially harmful airbag.

List of vehicles affected in Malaysia Source: PanduLaju.com
List of vehicles affected in Malaysia
Source: PanduLaju.com.my

You rush to the service center but you’re told they’re out of replacement airbag inflator kits. Naturally, you feel frustrated and mad, even. If car manufacturers are aware of the problem and have initiated a recall, surely they will have enough inventory right?

Frankly, it’s not that simple. The airbag kits come from Takata Corporation and Takata’s ramped up production capacity will take a while to replace an estimated 34 million airbags (this is the largest recall in automotive history). Takata has also resorted to sourcing replacement parts from other airbag producers but even their production capacities cannot fulfill the demand immediately; there’s also the issue of compatibility which has taken time to rectify.

We don't suppose you have one of these in your closet
We don’t suppose you have one of these in your closet

So what do you do in the meantime since you don’t have a bomb disposal suit at your… disposal? Some will suggest disabling the affected airbag but so far no manufacturer has recommended this move; only Toyota USA has recommended disabling the passenger airbag and keeping the front passenger seat unoccupied as stop-gap measures. Another (more sensible) idea is to replace the original steering wheel with an aftermarket one but you have to bear in mind that you’ll be driving a car without a supplemental restraint system (aka airbag).

The most ideal move is to not drive the affected car (or minimize driving) pending replacement of the airbag inflator. This is a good opportunity to carpool and bond with your neighbors or colleagues, or get familiar with our public transportation system (which has actually shown some improvement). Renting a car is also another possibility but isn’t financially prudent.

It’s also said that many of those hurt by the projectiles were shorter in height or sat close to the steering wheel. So in a household with an affected car, perhaps it’s best to let the taller person drive.

Just in case you didn’t know what’s happening with the affected Takata airbags, here’s a video to show you. FYI it’s not the airbag that harms you but the metal shrapnel flying out.

Below is a CBS’ news report on the recall from 2015:

Volvo’s VISTA Competition Sees Record Participation

The Volvo VISTA (Volvo International Service Training Award) 2015-16 competition broke its own record as the world’s biggest competition for aftermarket personnel with about 18,500 participants who represent the best Volvo Trucks and Volvo Buses workshop personnel from all over the world. 4,000 of those participants came from Asia Pacific region – the largest-ever contingent in this biennial event and double the number in the previous competition.

VISTA Asia Pacific Finals - 1The six teams from Asia Pacific that competed in the world final in Gothenburg, Sweden were:

  1. Red Borneo from Indonesia (APAC champions)
  2. Barra’s from Australia
  3. Jungli 9 from Taiwan
  4. Chullora Blues from Australia
  5. Wuhan Kaili Henan from China
  6. Royal Challengers from Singapore

With the VISTA competition, Volvo aims to shine a spotlight on strong teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Mr Jacques Michel, President of Volvo Trucks in Asia Pacific said, “We are extremely proud that the number of participants doubled in this year’s competition. Our aftermarket professionals are our frontliners who meet and interact with our customers each and every day. The McLaren 650S GT3 scored wins in both races at Townsville, continuing the run of strong results in the CAMS Australian GT Championship. Klark Quinn and Tony Walls, driving for customer teams Darrell Lea and Objective Racing, secured the pair of victories, and now see Quinn lead the championship.

In Race 1 Quinn – who started P6 – went on to take the win, after a late charge through the field. At the start of the race the Darrell Lea driver clawed his way to P4, and emerged from the pit cycle P2 before closing the six-second gap to the leader and taking the lead with a quarter of an hour left to run. Further down the order, championship leader Nathan Morcom in the Tekno Autosports Direct Plasterboard Outlet McLaren finished up P4.

Race 2 saw Tony Walls come through the pack after the set of stops in the two-hour contest to steal the win off Klark Quinn. Walls crossed the line P2 after a lengthy battle, but inherited the win after a post-race penalty pushed Quinn down to P7.

In the British GT Championship, customer team Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse enjoyed mixed fortunes at the Spa-Francorchamps round. Factory Driver Rob Bell helped steer the #79 650S GT3 to second in qualifying, while the 570S GT4 – still in its development season – scored a second consecutive pole position. In the race, a first lap collision cost Bell and teammate McCaig the chance of a first win of the year, while the 570S GT4 set the fastest lap but was later forced to retire from the lead.

• Sending emails to more than 35,000 owners.
• Blasting SMS to more than 126,000 customers.
• Sharing information about the recall in Honda’s ‘With Dreams’ magazine.
• Phone calls to customers – calls made to more than 2,000 customers thus far.

You can always check your vehicle’s recall status either by logging on to www.honda.com.my or www.productrecall.honda.com.my or by calling the Honda Toll-Free number 1-800-88-2020.

Here’s what to do if you HAVE received a notification:

Airbag Recall - DID YOU RECEIVE A NOTIFICATION LETTER BY HONDA MALAYSIA (YES)

And what to do if you HAVEN’T received any notification:

Airbag Recall - DID YOU RECEIVE A NOTIFICATION LETTER BY HONDA MALAYSIA (NO)

Below is Honda Malaysia’s official statement, ad verbatim:

Honda Malaysia sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused by Takata airbag inflator recalls and would like to apologize to our affected customers for the low stock of the replacement parts and for not being able to meet the replacement demands from the customers recently. We would like to assure that Honda is committed to addressing the needs and concerns of our customers who are affected by the current situation coming from the Takata airbag inflator issue. We have been working to secure an increasing supply of replacement parts from Takata, asking them to improve the supply of replacement parts, and we continue to expand the supply from other suppliers, such as Daicel, Autoliv and TRW. Honda Malaysia will continuously take every possible measure to ensure the replacement parts become promptly available so that our customers’ vehicles can be repaired as soon as possible.

1. Parts Supply and Stock Availability Outlook
Honda is currently working with Takata Corporation to increase supply for the replacement parts, and the replacement parts for Takata DRIVER front airbag inflators have started arriving since last week. We will ensure the replacement parts are delivered to all our dealers nationwide as soon as possible. Based on our thorough studies on the supply, we are now certain that Honda Malaysia will be able to have 100% stock availability for Takata DRIVER front airbag inflators by mid-August 2016 to ensure the replacement of the affected parts of the relevant recalls.

In the meantime, as for the replacement parts for the affected Takata PASSENGER front airbag inflators, we are still unable to give indications when we will be able to secure 100% stock availability in Malaysia, due to the shortage of the parts we have been experiencing globally since May 2016. Honda Malaysia will continue our best efforts to improve our stock level as soon as possible for the replacement. The company plans to inform our customers when the parts availability outlook becomes much clearer.

Due to the multiple recalls for Takata front airbag inflators, it would be possible that one vehicle is recalled for both Takata driver and passenger front airbags inflators. In this circumstance, however, there is a possibility that both airbags inflators in the vehicle might not be changed at one time due to the low availability of the replacement parts for Takata PASSENGER front airbag inflators. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and would like to seek for our customers’ understanding.

2. Service Capacity
While we work towards ensuring enough stock for replacement, we also look into our servicing capacity ensuring priority for airbag inflator change. Thus, we are focusing on the following measures to increase the capacity for Takata airbag inflator related recalls:

  • Reduce the Preventive Maintenance Service Schedule (maintenance service) intake starting 20th July 2016 at our dealers to 50% in order to increase the capacity for airbag inflator replacement. As priority is being given to airbag inflator replacement, there is a possibility that the normal preventive maintenance service might not be met. Honda Malaysia, in such cases, will extend the maintenance period and reflect accordingly in the warranty period of the involved cars.
  • Open three (3) temporary Central Hubs to further increase capacity for airbag inflator replacement. These three hubs will operate 7 days a week to provide additional centres for airbag inflator replacement, helping alleviate limited dealer capacities for airbag inflator replacement activity, and also to provide storage for the required parts. The locations of the Central Hubs will be announced soon.
  • Open Mobile Hubs nationwide to make it more convenient for customers to reach servicing venues and to ensure faster and easier airbag inflator replacement process. The locations and details of these Mobile Hubs will be announced soon.

We sincerely regret the inconvenience and distress caused by the Takata front airbag inflator recalls and parts shortage, as well as the delay in updating the replacement parts availability outlook. Safety of our customers is our highest priority and Honda Malaysia will do the best to ensure parts availability and sufficient service capacity together with our authorized dealers in Malaysia. We thank our customers for their kind patience and understanding.

In an effort to provide better platform for communication, Honda Malaysia has set up a special page www.productrecall.honda.com.my so that customers can log in to have better understanding on recall process flow. We have also prepared a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) to address customers’ concern and queries on the website for easy reference.

Note: Servicing for Parallel Imported Honda Vehicles
At Honda Malaysia, safety is our priority. Hence, the company is extending the replacement of Takata airbag inflators to parallel imported Honda vehicles, which were not sold by authorized Honda dealers in Malaysia. The owners of the parallel imported Honda vehicles are advised to contact any authorized Honda dealers in the country for the details of the required preparations to have their vehicles repaired as soon as possible. Cost of parts and labour for the airbag inflator replacement will be borne by Honda Malaysia.

Updated : Perodua Bezza Is Open For Booking!

It’s out even before it’s out. The much-awaited first EEV (Energy Efficient Vehicle) sedan from Perodua, which is completely designed by Malaysians, with strong support from Daihatsu Motor Company of Japan, will be open for booking at all Perodua showrooms nationwide starting this Saturday (16 July).

Update: The Bezza prices have been revealed. The 1.0L Standard is priced at RM 37,300 (manual) and RM 39,300 (auto); 1.3L Premium X, RM 42,800 (m) and RM 44,800 (a) and the 1.3L Advance, RM 50,800. Solid and metallic colors are priced the same and all come with Perodua’s 5-year or 150,000 km warranty.

“The long wait is over as we will soon launch our very own sedan on 21st July 2016 (we will know the retail price then). This sedan is the culmination of decades of technology collaboration and technology transfer with our partner Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd,” Perodua President & CEO, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

“It is with their guidance that we are now able to stand on our own with this ground breaking new model and it is the sedan that fits every Malaysian needs,” he said.

“This Perodua sedan, named Bezza, is our second transformation model (after the Axia) and our first global-ready car with the 1.3L Advance variant packed with advance safety features,” Aminar said.

The Perodua Bezza is produced at its EEV-certified plant (Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd), a modern facility with an automation rate of over 75% (the same plant produces the Perodua Axia).

“The sedan name takes inspiration from the word ‘Beza’ in Bahasa Malaysia, which means ‘different’. And that is exactly what Perodua’s first EEV sedan is – distinctly different,” Aminar said.
It breaks all conventions when it comes to what you expect from a compact sedan. The double ‘Z’ in the name, which somewhat resembles the number ‘22’, also subtly alludes to the fact that Perodua has been in the market for 22 years.

Perodua Bezza
The ‘Beyond Compact’ tagline also communicates that the Perodua Bezza goes beyond drivers’ expectations of what a Malaysian sedan offers. The advanced technology, amazing usability and affordability are built upon Perodua’s trademark of quality, reliability, value and care.

The sedan comes in 5 variants, the 1.0L manual transmission & automatic; the 1.3L “Premium X” manual & automatic and the 1.3L “Advanced Version” automatic.

The Perodua Bezza 1.3L Advance comes equipped with a Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) which detects and reduces skidding thus allows the driver to maintain stability while driving. This variant also comes with Brake Assist (BA) and Traction Control (TRC) which allows the car to maintain traction on a slippery road. It also has the Hill Start Assist (HSA) that prevents the car from rolling back on slopes when the brakes are released, giving the driver time to switch to the accelerator pedal.

In addition to these safety features, the Perodua Bezza variants come equipped with ABS, EBD and also intermittent speed-sensing windshield wiper; this improves visibility when driving in the rain.

Following Perodua’s signature design, the sedan is made with quality, comfort, spaciousness, reliability, affordability and looks in mind. The car’s design is based on customer feedback and preference, from both urban and rural users.

“The result is that potential buyers were looking for a sedan which has global features but at the consumers’ price. This sedan car has one of the biggest boot spaces in the market with 508 litres available in its class. It is also versatile enough with the foldable rear seats configuration (60:40) which result to 8 +1 seating configurations to allow for maximum flexibility to address a variety of situations for the customer. It does not compromise the interior which has plenty of leg room for a compact sedan,” Aminar added.

The Perodua EEV sedan is a first-of-its-kind for the compact car company as the car comes in a new 1.0 litre 1KR-VE engine with VVT-i and a 1.3 litre 1NR-VE engine with Dual VVT-i. The manual transmission has 5 speeds while the electronic automatic transmission (E-AT) has 4 speeds.

The Perodua Bezza 1.0 litre engine officially gets up to 22.8 km per litre (manual transmission) while the automatic can potentially travel 21.3 kilometres on a litre of petrol with eco driving.

“This feature is part of the model’s fuel saving technology adapted to Malaysian weather – another first for Perodua and a first for a national carmaker,” Aminar said.

Meanwhile, in eco drive, 1.3 litre’s manual transmission variant can potentially travel 21.7 kilometres per litre, while the automatic, 22 kilometres per litre as it has the ‘Eco Idle’ System (Advance variant only). The full tank can potentially travel up to 792km driving. The ‘Eco Idle’ system automatically stops the engine when the car is idle and restarts upon release of the brake, helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Drivers can deactivate this feature if they wish.

“The Perodua Bezza improvements to the exterior design also result in the best drag coefficient (CD) in Perodua history,” Aminar said.

Another first for Perodua is the push start/stop button and smart entry with smart key which available in the 1.3L variants only.

As for the multimedia toys, the Bezza 1.3L Advance variant is equipped with a multimedia-mobile link device where a user can access social media and entertainment features of their Android gadgets when the vehicle is static. Users can also interface navigation applications such as Waze and Google Maps through this “Smart Link” feature. On top of these features, back passengers can also charge their devices at a USB port located at the rear centre console.

“We believe that convergence between mobile technology and the car is inevitable. With that in mind we want our customers to use this technology as safe as possible when travelling,” Aminar said.

The Perodua Bezza variants is packed with amazing features such as shark fin antenna, remote boot release, one-touch power window with jam protection, front & front corner sensors, reverse camera, reverse sensors amongst others.

“With features available in luxury vehicles incorporated into the Perodua Bezza plus its attractive design, smooth ride, quality at affordable pricing, increasing our export footprint will become a reality,” he said further.

The car is available in 6 colours – Sugar Brown and Ocean Blue (1.3L variants), which are new metallic colours for Perodua, as well as existing colours of Lava Red, Ebony Black, Glittering Silver & Solid Ivory White. Perodua uses eco-friendly water based paint which also provides a better finish.

Perodua will be holding their Raya Open House at all showrooms and service centres nationwide on 16 July 2016 from 9am -5pm and are inviting the public to join in the festivities.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world’s largest maker of memory chips and smartphones is said to be buying stake in BYD, a Chinese manufacturer of cars and electric vehicle batteries.

Korea Economic Daily reported that the South Korean electronics giant has agreed to buy new shares worth 3 billion yuan (RM 1.77 billion) in BYD, which equals a 4 percent stake in a company that also sees Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. as shareholder.

Samsung SDI batterySamsung has declined to comment but a stake in BYD will put Samsung in the supply chain in the burgeoning electric vehicles market in China (now the world’s largest market for electric vehicles). It was reported that an affiliate of Samsung wasn’t included in a list of approved battery suppliers by China which could be the reason for the company to purchase a stake in the Chinese battery maker.

How To Properly Jump-start Your Car Battery

$

PROTON Holdings Berhad (PROTON) has shared their official statement to refute the recent image circulating on social media warning Proton owners to not jump-start certain Proton models as it will cause irreparable damage to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU). As logic and PROTON will tell you, all cars can be jump-started.

However, just like other cars, Protons are also equipped with electronic systems which are sensitive to power surges. So here, PROTON has provided a more accurate guide to safely jump-start your car with jumper cables (this procedure can also be found in Proton’s Owner’s Manual, as well as that of most brands).

The proper procedure to jump-start a car is to (1) connect the (+) battery from the assisting car to the (+) terminal of the battery of the affected car; (2) the (-) terminal from the assisting car must be connected to the body of the affected car (i.e. the car that needs to be jump-started), NOT to its (-) terminal.

The other important steps to be noted (also stated in the Owner’s Manual) when using jumper cables connected to a battery from another vehicle, include:

  • Both vehicles should be close enough so that the jumper cables can be connected, but NOT touching each other. If they are, it could cause an undesirable ground connection. It will not be possible to start the vehicle, and the bad grounding could damage the electrical systems (Transmission Control Unit, TCU).
  • The assisting vehicle must have a 12-volt battery and the capacity (Ah) of the booster battery should not be significantly lower than that of the discharged battery, this is to avoid damage of circuit shorting both vehicles.
  • Only use jumper cables with insulated battery clamps.
  • Vehicle must be positioned in “P” (PARK) for automatic transmission and “N” (NEUTRAL) for manual transmission.
  • Turn off the ignition on both vehicles beforehand.
  • When connecting the booster cable, DO NOT connect the positive (+) cable to the negative (-) terminal or it can cause sparks and battery can explode.
  • The negative jumper cable (black) must NEVER be clamped to fuel lines with metal sheath or to the fuel filter or brake lines as this could cause a fire.
  • Start the engine in the vehicle, which has the booster battery, let the engine idle for a few minutes and then start the engine in the vehicle with the discharged battery.
  • After the engine is started, disconnect the cables in reverse order.

How to jump-start your vehicle - ENGALWAYS refer to your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual prior to performing any emergency start to the battery, for your own safety.

You can call PROTON’s Customer Care Hotline (1 800 888 398) or email customercare@proton.com for any enquiries and assistance on further inspection as well as battery replacement.

Rolls-Royce Dawn Unveiled In Malaysia

A new Dawn has arrived in Malaysia. The new award-winning, four-seater, super-opulent Drophead Rolls-Royce Dawn made its debut today at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Kuala Lumpur showroom at Quill 9, Petaling Jaya. Billed as ‘defining the very essence of luxury motoring’ by some in the automotive community, the Dawn’s arrival sets the benchmark for super-luxury convertibles.

As Asia Pacific Regional Director, Paul Harris put it, “Dawn is redefining luxury motoring by offering an involvement like no other – being superbly relaxing to drive and making its occupants feel incredibly special. It is the pinnacle luxury good for Malaysia – rare, bespoke and hand-crafted to the unmistakeable Rolls-Royce hallmark standard. Its design evokes glamour and offers a modern, social experience. Dawn’s bold and contemporary design heralds a new chapter in Rolls-Royce’s illustrious history. In many markets we have seen interest from a broad segment of customers who are new to the brand, as well as more established customers.”

David Kim & Dato Michael Ong with Rolls-Royce Dawn, Malaysia
L-R: David Kim and Dato Michael Ong at the official launch of the Rolls Royce Dawn

The Dawn was introduced by Dato’ Michael Ong, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Kuala Lumpur who said, “Through the years, we have seen the Rolls-Royce brand transform with a younger generation of entrepreneurs aspiring to own a Rolls-Royce. Ghost and Wraith reset perceptions of what a modern Rolls-Royce should look like. We are proud to partner with Rolls-Royce as we embark on this new journey.”

As David Kim, Regional Sales Manager of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars explained, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn features 80% unique body panels and even new tyres as special fitment for the model, despite looking very similar to the 2-door Wraith. And where the Wraith is about power, Dawn is a more relaxed creature.

Rolls-Royce Dawn Spirit Of Ecstasy MalaysiaTo ensure serenity in the cabin, the engineers paid great attention to the Dawn’s roof making the car comparable to the hard-topped Wraith. Even with the roof down (it takes just over 20 seconds to put it up or take it down, at a cruising speed of up to 50km/h), the wind deflector helps maintain sanity within the passenger cell, making it one of the quietest convertibles around. The 6-layered fabric roof is connected to a smooth, noiseless mechanism that dances like a ‘Silent Ballet’ to maintain its luxurious vibe.

The Dawn’s design is of a more contemporary, four-seat super-luxury Drophead that stays true to Rolls-Royce’s design language, to target the affluent young. Its lines are dynamic and classy but not too flamboyant.

The deck continues Rolls-Royce’s excellence in modern craftsmanship. Open-pore Canadel panelling traces the horse-shoe shape of the rear cabin, whilst the wood on the deck, which can be chosen to suit individual taste, flows down the ‘Waterfall’ between the rear seats, and around the cabin clothing the interior door panels – enticing an owner or passenger to enter Dawn.

And if you’re wondering, the standard-issue umbrellas aren’t housed within the coach doors but in the front wings. The Dawn is powered by a 6.6-litre twin-turbo V-12 that produces 563 hp. But since it’s a Rolls-Royce, technical specifications aren’t important questions a potential buyer will ask. And as with all cars in this category, the Dawn is bespoke so the price tag is dependent on your fancies.

The Dawn will be available for viewing by invitation from 22 – 24 July, 11:00am to 8:00pm at Bangsar Shopping Centre.
